Lesson 4 – Dinosaur Paleontologists

Objectives:
Given prior knowledge and a shovel, students will dig for dinosaur bones like a paleontologist would do.


Materials:
· Digital Camera
· Shovels
· Dinosaur bones (cow bones)
· Bones, Bones, Dinosaur Bones by Byron Barton


Procedures:

Introduction:
Understanding the various roles and responsibilities of jobs available to everyone is an important concept in Pre-K education. This lesson will help students understand the role of a paleontologist. The students will use shovels to dig for bones and can identify their bone.

Implementation:
The teacher will read the book Bones, Bones, Dinosaur Bones. The class will discuss the role of the paleontologist. The students will be taken outside to the playground where the bones have been previously buried. The students will each be given a shovel. On the count of three all students will find one bone and then find a teacher. When everyone has a bone, the students will have their picture taken with the bone and tell the teacher their bone name.

Closure:
At the end of the lesson, the students will go inside and listen to a teacher paleontologist tell about the bones she found. This will give the students a chance to share their experiences as well.

Evaluation:
The students will be evaluated on finding a bone. The picture taken will be placed in the student’s portfolio for reference.
